I’ll answer the question posed in the title right off the bat. I do not think that Bernie Sanders should drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president. His chances of winning are rapidly approaching zero, but he continues to serve an important purpose; he forces Hillary Clinton to at least verbally distance herself from her rich backers and spend more time talking about the problems of the rest of us, the majority of US citizens and residents.
Of course, there is no way of knowing if Hillary Clinton will stick with her new-found concern for normal people when she is elected president, which, given the dysfunction of the Republican Party, appears almost inevitable. When she is president, she will still owe favors to the people, organizations, and companies that financially backed her and that paid her obscenely high fees for giving speeches, a form of legalized political bribery.
Hillary Clinton is not one of us. She is just as much a member of the economic elite as is Donald Trump. Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration; she’s not nearly as out of touch as Trump, but she is not a person who understand the problems of ordinary US citizens.
As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog entry, despite Hillary Clinton’s negatives, I voted for her in Arizona’s Democratic primary, and I plan to vote for her in the general election. All candidates, indeed all human beings, are imperfect. Given the candidates who are presently running for nomination in the two major US political parties, she is the best choice. She’s not perfect by a long shot, but anyone who cannot see the weaknesses of the candidate that she or he backs is a blind ideologue and not a thoughtful voter.
The next election is likely to make history. If Hillary Clinton is elected, she will be our first female president. Bernie Sanders would be our first Jewish president. If Donald Trump or Ted Cruz is elected, history will not be made. We’ve had mentally deranged presidents in the past.
